Imagine yourself walking off a busy street in America and through a door that takes you back in time to the cozy and communal atmosphere of a traditional pub 100 years ago in Ireland. This is what David Kelly and Ciaran Sheehan set out to accomplish when they built their first Rí Rá pub in Charlotte, NC in 1997. They set to work in Dublin to meticulously restore the unique Victorian bar in the middle of the Charlotte pub.

Lavin’s pub stood unchanged from 1889 until 1998 when it began its journey, piece by piece, to Providence. This wonderful example of a traditional shop bar is center-stage at Rí Rá where it sets the tone for a warm and convivial atmosphere.

Whilst the center bar at Rí Rá first opened as Lavin’s in 1889, there are numerous other antiquities of interest throughout the pub. The iron pillars at the entrance to the pub, for example, were part of the original steam driven machinery from the cotton mills in Drogheda, County Louth. They originate from the early 1800's. The parlor bar, c. 1850, was recovered from a Georgian property in Dublin that was gutted by fire in 1995.

Of particular interest is the stain glass panel in the Gothic bar. Dating from the 1600's, it is an example of early glasswork. It has been re-leaded, but look closely and you’ll see that the glass is uneven and irregular in thickness. Glass at that time was blown and flattened by hand before it cooled. Also of interest in the gothic bar are the pillars and paneling that came from Belfast, c.1700's.

Much of the wood paneling in the Gothic bar came from the Victorian era including old wooden doors form the now closed Jervis Street hospital in Dublin. Look closely at the wood paneling in this area and you will see the shadows of numbers that once hung on the doors, as they left an imprint in the grain of the wood.
