Chef Tony Maws is a strong believer in the concept of terroir, that certain sense of place which makes many great foods great. Can a restaurant have terroir too? Who’s to say? But any visitor to Kirkland Tap & Trotter will take a quick look around the room — with its exposed brick walls and old ceiling beams — and quickly realize that this location has some stories to tell. For 37 years, 425 Washington Street in Somerville was home to the legendary Kirkland Cafe — occasionally also known as Studley’s — a truly local bar owned by Ellie & Joe Hernon and beloved by residents in the neighborhood. From its early days in the 1970’s, the owners were seemingly never content to run a just a plain old bar. They sponsored bike races from The Kirkland, around Fresh Pond and back. They held peanut rolling contests. The bar was home to one of the original six teams of the Minute Man Dart League, which today oversees hundreds of teams.
At Bergamot we’ve combined our love for great food, wine and friends. Having worked in some amazing local restaurants, we wanted to take all that we know and make it our own. You’ll see Keith in the kitchen and Servio at the door. We’re cooking up “Progressive American Cuisine” — we’re having fun with the best local produce we can find, complementing it with ingredients from around the world, and serving it with neighborhood warmth. Ask about our daily $46 Prix-Fixe Menu which Keith changes several times a week, reacting to our fresh-from-the-farm deliveries. We’re open every night with a full bar, creative cocktails, great bar menu, a fantastic wine list with surprising winemakers and price points, and a talented kitchen crew. The word “moona” or “mouneh” in slang comes from the Arabic word mana or ma'oona, meaning "storing." In other words, it’s the English equivalent of the “pantry.” In the past, especially in remote villages in the Arab World, the moona was prepared during the bountiful harvest for consumption during winter's harsh days, providing fundamental nourishment for the daily meal, having transformed perishable produce into food with a long shelf life. Things such as olives, pickles, preserved lemons, cheese, spices, herbs, jams, etc. Moona cherishes the culinary tradition of nourishment, sustenance and purity in the Arabic and Eastern Mediterranean tradition. Dishes will be served in a sharable format.
BRONWYN is a restaurant and bar located in Union Square, Somerville, featuring the cuisine of Germany and greater Central and Eastern Europe. Chef Tim Wiechmann draws on his cultural heritage to create hand-crafted sausages, schnitzels, traditional noodles and specialties such as Riesling sauerkraut and giant pretzels. An extensive list of bier and regional wein has been curated to enhance the cuisine. The chef’s wife, Bronwyn, is the restaurant’s namesake. The interior of BRONWYN embodies the rusticity of a European tavern and is adorned with the handcrafted treasures of the Chef’s travels and his family’s heirlooms. Upon entering the restaurant, one is reminded of the artistic spirit that imbues the neighborhood of Union Square. BRONWYN is open for dinner seven nights a week; the adjacent biergarten overlooks lively Union Square during the warm months.
